Rollercoasters - Energy

Submitted by kate.elliott on

Students in Heidi Broderick’s class have been learning about forces and conservation of energy. Students put their knowledge of Kinetic and Potential energy to the test as they collaborated, designed, and built a roller coaster with tubing, 1 meter of making tape, and a BB. They had to include 2 loops, a corkscrew, and the BB had to stop within 30cm of exiting their track. There are really fine engineers at Maple Grove!

This week in PE, students had the opportunity to learn a new game called paddlezlam. They were working with a teammate to score different types of points. They really seem to be getting the hang of it and having a lot of fun!

What is Inertia?

Submitted by kate.elliott on

Katie Miller's 7th Grade Science class was learning about gravity and inertia using a water balloon. Students used a water balloon connected to a clothespin and piece of string.  The students swung the balloon around in a circle until the balloon reached escape velocity. Then the students noted that the balloon continued in a straight line from the point it left the clothespin.
